The Parents Come to Memphis

Date November 30, 2007

Sometimes I don’t even know where to begin…there’s just so much. Thank god I have easy-going parents. I think some parents might have slapped their kids for taking them to the places I took mine this weekend. I guess I thought of it as an opportunity to try out places that I wouldn’t risk trying out on other people. That’s what family is for, right? My choices of activities…. Well, I had good intentions.

Turns out the music venue, WildBills, that I had chosen is basically a hole in the wall place in a not so nice neighborhood. I’m pretty sure that we were the only people that were charged a $10 cover. As soon as we got there, I made the decision to down my first beer and leave asap. Fortunately, they only serve quarts of beer so we stayed until closing. While the band warmed up, my mom and I admired the Christmas decorations that had been up for say 17-18 years and the lovely bow stapled to the wall. We took a picture. My dad wandered around the place making friends. Once the band got started, things got a little more exciting. I guess some people might think it is odd, but the only times I’ve gone out dancing in Memphis is when my parents are in town. So we all had a blast dancing it up, everyone’s friends on the dance floor.

The rest of the weekend was spent at thrift stores, rummage sales, and overpriced antique show. The spectrum of used things. Our first stop was a rummage sale, and interestingly enough one of the sellers was rolling around in the pile of clothes for sale. The rest of the sellers were lounging on the broken for-sale furniture smoking. My dad found out that they were raising money to buy the roofless building across the street to start a commune. I bought a Marilyn Monroe poster for $3 and my dad bought boots for $5. I think that might have covered the hippie’s cigarettes for the first hour. I’m kinda questioning the feasibility of their plan.
