At the Fiji house at the University of Oklahoma during my Junior year 1999 we recruited about 15 strapping young men from the private schools of Tulsa. They were all mostly from Cascia Hall and Moreland was one of the leaders of the group.
When they first came to OU they were highly in tuned with hiking, granola, widespread panic, shaggy hair and all things green and natural. At the time I was playing the role of fraternity drill instructor and was none too pleased with the whole hippy vibe that they had brought to the Fiji House. Silly, I realize, but throughout our lives we all play many roles in this divine comedy we call life.
Needless to say I was very tough on the “Cascia Hippies” - including having many out of control conflicts with Moreland. Especially after he was an initiated member. It was pretty bad - we actually got into fisticuffs (shoving, pushing, wrestling - neither one of us are street fighters). I was a bit of a beef head at the time and anyone who knows Moreland will tell you that he is not shy of running his mouth.
Moreland ended up going to TU lawschool after college and we ended up having some classes together. It was at that point that we buried the hatchet and became friends. Moreland has a few different features on my personal website and the event in this post is the first. Moreland is a social juggernaut - here are the pics from his Birthday in 2004:
